TRANSPORT BUSINESS HELPS SUPPLEMENT INCOME

By Cecilia Miller

Rolling Thunder Farms and owners Jimmy & Nancy Stepp became fully equipped in the alpaca transport business in order to meet the need of their own animals. Over time, they developed a solid business helping other breeders and owners move their livestock as well.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jimmy during one of his cross-country jaunts that brought him through my neck of the woods. According to Jimmy, "Most of our transport occurs when other owners have time constraints that prevent them from doing their own driving, or they are hesitant about taking the valuable animals on such a long drive. The main reason for alpaca moving is to accommodate show attendance, breeding schedules and sales transactions."

Rolling Thunder Farms transports alpacas of all sizes using a 2005 Ford F250 truck and a five horse slant load trailer by Essex.

"I have converted the horse trailer to the needs of alpacas". Jimmy said. "I began by removing the slant-load gates and built moveable gates to accommodate a variety of possible compartments and sizes."

The alpaca's thick fleece easily prevents them from getting cold, but when temperatures are hot outside the situation becomes more problematic. Not to worry. Rolling Thunder Farms trailer is equipped with a sophisticated ventilation system to prevent heat stress and to provide all the creature comforts for the alpacas when they are being transported during the hot spring, summer or fall months.

The experience of Jimmy and Nancy Stepp as alpaca owners and breeders ensures that the transport customers will receive top care for their animals any time they decide to put them on the road.

The customer must provide insurance for their animals, but Jimmy can help with a referral in this area, too.
